Why choose Sublime Book Review?

Finding the right reviews for the right budget can be hard for an Indie or self-published author. And in many cases, you unknowingly pay for a review that is 100% guaranteed positive. While it’s nice for a reviewer to tell you your book is “the greatest book ever written,” this doesn’t necessarily help you, the author, and it certainly doesn’t help the industry leaders (librarians, booksellers, media professionals) make calculated decisions about purchasing your book or requesting your title for their library.

Tropical Depression by Patti Liszkay is a powerful and emotionally charged novel that follows the story of Lupe and Ascensión, who have been deported from America and are struggling to adjust to life back to Nicaragua, having left behind their American-born child. Until they could be reunited, they found work at a geothermal plant built on a large volcano, where they made important connections. The first part of the book takes place at Ascensión’s grandfather’s home, where readers are introduced to a diverse group of characters, each with their unique personalities and relationships with one another. Throughout the novel, the tension between Lupe and the other women of the family is palpable.

Liszkay is skilled at bringing each character to life with detailed descriptions and provides their family trees at the beginning of each part of the novel, helping readers to better understand the relationships between the characters from both Nicaragua and the United States. The American couple, Sally and Silvio, play an important role in portraying the cultural contrast between Nicaragua and America.

Although the book could benefit from more editing in some parts, the dialogue flows smoothly and keeps readers engaged throughout. Tropical Depression deals with important themes such as family relationships, cultural differences, and navigating emotional turmoil. It's worth noting that this is the third book in the Equal and Opposites trilogy, but it can be enjoyed as a standalone novel.

Sublime Line: “A powerful and emotional look at a raw human experience that transcends borders.”
