In An Innocent World, Douglas A. King explores the biblical story of Adam and Eve, and the choice they made to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, as a framework to contrast the immortal life we could have lived or a mortal life we now experience. The author brings the reader through a hypothetical world without suffering or guilt, while comparing it to our current reality: one with suffering, but capable of fostering knowledge and personal growth. Drawing from the bible, logic, and research, the author presents a series of compelling comparisons that encourage readers to reflect on the cost of knowledge of good and evil, as well as the meaning of human experience.
The author broadly examines how the immortal path might influence relationships, family, politics, sports, and religion, while also asking philosophical questions. Would homelessness exist? Would there be mental illness, and if so, what would the root causes be? Throughout the book, the author jumps from multiple themes and comparisons rapidly, and oftentimes reading more like personal opinion. Given the complex topic, more depth and research focused on fewer topics would have added more weight to the points. However, his perspective was thought-provoking and urges the reader to consider the role we have as humans in the guilty society, the impact we have to society as a whole, and what path we would want to take. Although the author discloses that a belief in God is essential for fully grasping the content, I think anyone can find value in the introspective and philosophical journey his writing offers.
Sublime Line: “ Rooted in big questions dating back to Adam and Eve, An Innocent World is a reflective exploration of human choice, spiritual consequence, and the deeper meaning of our existence.”
